Bank-failure explorer
Explore the 4,115 FDIC bank-failure records in the curated slice, from 1934 to 2026. Filter by era, state, resolution type or charter class; chart the failures-per-year timeline; and download the exact rows. Every value is real published FDIC data — nothing is fabricated or imputed.
FreeNIC frames US banking over 1863–2026 (163 years). Federal failure records begin with the 1934 creation of the FDIC — the earlier era on the 163-year spine tracks bank counts and balance sheets, not resolution events. So this timeline starts at 1934 by construction, not by omission.
Failures per year
Resolution codes (FDIC): PA/P&A purchase &
assumption, PO payout, IDT insured-deposit transfer,
A/A assistance, OBAM open-bank assistance/merger. Charter classes:

sources directory for the FDIC lineage.

The bank_failures table is real FDIC BankFind failure/assistance
records (public), harmonized in the FreeNIC pipeline alongside the academic Robin
failing-banks compilation. Monetary fields (total_assets,
total_deposits, estimated_loss) are in US-dollar thousands ($000s) as
published by FDIC; nulls (e.g. some estimated-loss values) are shown as —, never
invented. Full provenance: Methodology & DPR.
